U2’s Rattle and Hum from 1988 is part studio album, part live document and part love letter to American roots music. The band stretches beyond the sound of The Joshua Tree with blues, gospel and rock influences, while tracks like “Desire”, “Angel of Harlem” and “All I Want Is You” sit alongside powerful live performances. It can feel sprawling, but that is also part of its charm. An ambitious, big-hearted record from U2 at the height of their late-1980s run.
