Heartattack and Vine (1980) finds Tom Waits at the grubbiest end of his Asylum years: bluesier, harder and already edging towards the stranger music that would follow. The title track snarls, “Downtown” swings and “Jersey Girl” and “Ruby’s Arms” provide the bruised romantic heart. This is the unofficial edition listed on Discogs rather than an original Asylum pressing, but the music remains classic Waits: barrooms, bad luck, crooked characters and surprisingly beautiful songs underneath all that gravel.
