The Mountain Goats - Jenny From Thebes (Yellow & Black)

Jenny from Thebes (2023) is a wonderfully ambitious Mountain Goats record, conceived by John Darnielle as a sequel to 2002’s All Hail West Texas. This time Jenny, one of his recurring characters, moves to the centre of the story in what is essentially a rock opera. Produced by Trina Shoemaker, it is far more richly arranged than the old lo-fi days, with strings, horns and guest guitar from Alicia Bognanno. “Clean Slate”, “Fresh Tattoo” and “Jenny III” are particular highlights.
