Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Kicking Against the Pricks is their 1986 collection of covers, but it feels far more substantial than a stopgap. Cave and the band reinterpret songs by Johnny Cash, John Lee Hooker, Roy Orbison, The Velvet Underground and others through their own dark, haunted lens. “The Singer”, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart” are particular standouts. Strange, atmospheric and beautifully chosen, it reveals just how broad Cave’s musical roots really are.
