New Musik’s 1980 debut, From A to B, is one of those clever little records that deserved a bigger audience. Led by Tony Mansfield, it mixes bright synth-pop, acoustic guitars and wonderfully precise production with lyrics that are often much darker than the music suggests. “Living by Numbers”, “This World of Water” and “Straight Lines” are the obvious hooks, but the whole album is remarkably consistent. Smart, melodic, slightly odd and very English, it still sounds fresh more than four decades later.
