Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On from 1971 is soulful, warm and beautifully put together, with songs that flow almost seamlessly into one another. Gaye moves beyond straightforward Motown pop to explore war, poverty, racism and the state of the world, but the album never loses its musical ease. “What’s Going On”, “Mercy Mercy Me” and “Inner City Blues” remain standouts. Smooth, thoughtful and deeply human, this is one of those records that rewards listening from beginning to end.
