Keith Jarrett’s The Köln Concert is, for me, simply one of the great albums. Recorded live at the Cologne Opera House on 24 January 1975, the entire double album was improvised, yet it unfolds with an almost impossible sense of melody, structure and emotion. Jarrett moves effortlessly from quiet, searching passages to rolling gospel-like rhythms and moments of real beauty. This US ECM 1064/65 pressing was manufactured and distributed by Polydor and cut at Sterling Sound. More than just a jazz record, it is an absorbing, deeply human performance and one of the finest solo piano recordings ever made.
