Unknown Pleasures (1979) still sounds astonishing: cold, spacious and somehow completely alive. Martin Hannett’s production turned Joy Division’s stark songs into something far stranger and more atmospheric, with “Disorder”, “New Dawn Fades”, “She’s Lost Control” and “Shadowplay” among the essentials. This 2015 European Factory reissue (FACT 10R) is a 180g remastered pressing in a textured sleeve replicating the original artwork, with the rounded-corner picture inner. A very good modern version of one of post-punk’s truly untouchable albums.
