Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee

Japanese Breakfast’s Jubilee from 2021 is Michelle Zauner’s brightest, most expansive album, trading some of her earlier melancholy for lush indie pop, orchestral colour and genuine joy. “Be Sweet”, “Paprika” and “Slide Tackle” are immediate highlights, but the record also has plenty of emotional depth beneath its polished surface. Zauner’s songwriting remains sharp and personal, while the arrangements feel ambitious without becoming overworked. Warm, elegant and beautifully produced, Jubilee is one of the standout indie pop albums of the early 2020s.
