Garbage’s Version 2.0 from 1998 sharpens the band’s mix of alternative rock, electronic production and pop hooks into something sleek, dark and hugely effective. Shirley Manson is magnetic throughout, especially on “Push It”, “I Think I’m Paranoid”, “Special” and “When I Grow Up”. The production is dense but never overwhelming, full of distorted guitars, loops and studio detail. Stylish, cynical and instantly catchy, Version 2.0 remains one of the standout alternative rock albums of the late 1990s.
