Efterklang - Magic Chairs (US)

Efterklang’s Magic Chairs from 2010 finds the Danish band balancing intricate art-pop arrangements with a warmer, more direct sense of melody. Strings, brass, electronics and layered vocals are woven together with remarkable detail, but songs like “Modern Drift” and “I Was Playing Drums” never feel overloaded. There is a gentle melancholy running through the album, matched by moments of real uplift. Elegant, inventive and quietly emotional, Magic Chairs is a beautiful example of orchestral indie pop done with imagination and restraint.
