Back in Black (1980) is AC/DC at full power: huge riffs, zero wasted motion and Brian Johnson stepping in after Bon Scott’s death without trying to imitate him. Produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange, it includes “Hells Bells”, “Shoot to Thrill”, “You Shook Me All Night Long” and the title track. This 2009 European reissue (Columbia/Albert, 5107651) is the remastered 180g pressing. Not subtle in any way, but almost ridiculously effective — hard rock boiled down to its absolute essentials.
