The Decemberists’ What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World from 2015 is one of their warmer and more accessible records, mixing literate songwriting with folk rock, indie pop and big melodic choruses. “Make You Better”, “Philomena” and “The Wrong Year” are immediate standouts, while the quieter songs give the album plenty of balance. Colin Meloy is as sharp as ever, but the band sounds less theatrical here and more direct. A thoughtful, melodic album with plenty to return to.
