Lambchop’s Nixon (2000) was the album that transformed Kurt Wagner’s sprawling Nashville collective from cult curiosity into critical favourites. Blending country, soul, orchestral pop and dry humour, it sounds unlike almost anything else of its era. Wagner’s fragile falsetto floats over warm strings, horns and understated grooves, particularly on “The Old Gold Shoe”, “You Masculine You” and the joyous “Up With People”. Hugely acclaimed in Britain, Nixon remains Lambchop’s defining early masterpiece and a wonderfully eccentric take on American music.
